Q&A
How early should you get in touch with us before the shoot begins?
Ideally, as early as possible. Forward-looking planning not only saves time, but also reduces costs—especially when seasonal motifs, such as summery landscapes, need to be realized in harmony with the intended time of year. As the final development is usually quite time-intensive (e.g. for production design and the Director of Photography), we recommend finalizing all backdrop-related decisions well in advance. Depending on the motif, printing process, and current workload, it may be necessary to schedule print slots up to two months ahead of time.
Can we book you exclusively for the complete production of a backdrop, or is it also possible to choose only specific steps of the production process?
Of course, you can book us for the entire production process or just for specific steps of the backdrop creation. We work with a modular system that provides you with maximum transparency and flexibility. You select exactly the services that are relevant to your project, while always keeping track of the next steps. This allows processes to be planned efficiently, saving time and costs while avoiding unnecessary effort.
We need to realize a backdrop at short notice due to a tight production schedule, but we don’t yet have a specific motif. Can you support us with this?
Absolutely. For situations like this, we offer tailored location scouting. If you’re looking for a specific period or architectural style, we begin with focused research to jointly define the creative direction. Building on that, we conduct a dedicated scouting phase to identify a selection of suitable options from which you can choose the final backdrop.
Can we come to you with an already produced photograph of our motif?
This is generally possible. However, it is ideal if you get in touch with us beforehand, so we can clearly explain the requirements the data needs to meet for compositing and printing. Alternatively, you are very welcome to entrust us with the entire photographic execution. We take care of all steps involved and ensure that the result is perfectly prepared for use as a backdrop.
The studio shoot takes place in winter, but my story is set in summer. How can this be achieved?
No problem—that’s exactly what backdrops are made for. Whenever possible, we capture the motif in the appropriate season to achieve an authentic atmosphere. If that isn’t feasible, we refine the image in post-production to create a consistent summer look. And if your story is not tied to a specific season, we will of course develop a visual solution that fits your narrative perfectly.
When does a translight backdrop make sense — and what advantages does it offer over a single-sided backdrop?
A translight backdrop reveals its full potential wherever a realistic, cinematic lighting atmosphere is required. Unlike traditional front-lit backdrops, it creates depth, mood, and a natural sense of spatial presence rather than appearing flat. By allowing illumination from both the front (day) and the back (night), a translight offers precise control over brightness, contrast, and color temperature. Different times of day, weather conditions, or narrative lighting moods can be achieved directly on set — without the need for extensive post-production. Another key advantage: seamless transitions between day and night setups are possible at any time, without any physical reconfiguration.
Why is compositing the most time-intensive part, and what should we consider during planning?
Compositing is particularly time-intensive for several reasons. On the one hand, the creative and technical execution requires a high level of care and attention to detail, which simply takes time, even when using the latest AI technology. On the other hand, close coordination and clear communication are essential, as they afford the time needed to implement your ideas efficiently and without delay. Ideally, as many aspects as possible are discussed and defined in detail in advance. In practice, however, productions often request interim results, which then lead to further adjustments. During this phase, frequent video calls could be required — something that can become especially challenging once the production is already shooting and time is limited.
How long does it take to print a backdrop?
The production time varies depending on material, format, and printing method. While single-sided prints can often be completed within a few days, large-format translights require significantly more lead time—not least due to limited capacity and the workload of print facilities. Test prints and their evaluation also affect the overall timeline and should be factored into the planning at an early stage.
Do you print in-house yourselves?
No, the printing is not carried out in-house. Instead, we collaborate with experienced print partners who share our high quality standards and reliably meet the specific demands of the film industry.
Do you cover printing costs upfront for your clients?
No, printing costs are billed directly between you and the respective print provider.
Do you deliver internationally?
Yes! Please get in touch with us in advance. In some cases, a local print provider may be the better solution. Of course, we will assist you with this and coordinate all processes reliably with the print partner—both here and abroad.
